MEET THE ORIGINAL MOLLY KOOL
Molly Kool was born in Alma, NB, in 1916. She was the first woman to be a licensed Captain in North America as well as the first female deep-sea Captain in North America. After high school, and after growing up sailing on her father’s boat (the Jean K.), she entered the Merchant Marine School in Saint John, NB. She had to convince them to admit her but graduated with her Mate’s Certification in 1937. She was the only woman to ever attend the school. In 1939, after another round of convincing, she graduated from the Merchant Marine Institute in Yarmouth, NS, and obtained her Coastal Master’s Certificate.
